Destroying Angel Trinity [detail] Chris Drury ARBS
Chris Drury, Simon Linington & William Mackrell
Nature is our surrounding force. It inspires us with its inherent and evolving creativity from a microscopic to a macroscopic level, new perspectives emerge and our perception is challenged leading to enquiry. It is this human quality that lies at the root of this exhibition.
Drawing on Ideas is about information and how we extract and then process this from the things that we see, feel, hear, taste and smell. It emphasises our individuality and our differences. How we evaluate and assess information to understand the world around us. The essence of what we know or what we think we know is challenged everyday simply by what exists and what is created. The artists selected for this exhibition present these questions through their respective works and invite the audience to question the paradox of what is and what could be, creating a dialogue where opinions can be expressed and shared.
Chris Drury exhibits two works, Destroying Angel Trinity (2003) and Destroying Angel Nevada (2011). Both works are inspired by a long fascination with the power and symbolic references of fungi, Drury says, “a mushroom can feed you, kill you or cure you”.
Simon Linington and William Mackrell’s body of work explores the concept of interpretation and representation. The two artists began by writing a set of rules that were designed to provoke an abstract description of an object. These rules were given to a mutual friend who was tasked with constructing this description. The identity of the object was not revealed to the two artists.
