Solo Exhibition by Sarah Maple

The Aubin Gallery is pleased to present 'It's A Girl', a major exhibition of new works by Sarah Maple. Described by the Independent on Sunday as “the heir to Tracey Emin's throne..." Maple's artwork is unfailingly bold and brave, not for the coy or faint of heart.

Funny, powerful, surprising, sexy, brilliantly intelligent - this is visual rock 'n' roll, an iconic collection of work which will surely define Maple as one of the most important voices of her generation.

Incredible work

A raw and thought provoking collection by the artist Sarah Maple. This is a fascinating yet funny exploration into gender taboo and stereotypes carried by a sincerity and humble innocence that sets her apart from other 'feminist' painters. Sarah Maple has made her transcendence. She is not just any YBA, she is a genuine talent that has set her own benchmark for other new artists to follow.

Sarah Maple has Balls

and I'm glad to see she's not afraid to use them.

Sarah is able to talk to the viewer in a way that leaves them in stitches but with their last breath wants to tell their friends, and their mum.... but not too sure how to say the word "period" without sounding like Miranda Hart.

A brilliant use of blood in a non ironic 90's Men Behaving Badly Brit Pack way, but how girls should approach their bodies now. Women are not men and not wanting to be men and should not be wanting to be what men want blah blah, oh, Sarah puts this succinctly in just one Vajazzle.

I'd love to see Sarah Maple art direct the first edition of The Sun on Sunday. She'd know where to stick a Disney Princess.

See the show to find out who's Ref.

Let's have a bit of healthy dissent here

by Daveface 05.03.12 16:46

The paintings and ideas in this show are really pretty average. This is art that claims to represent larger concerns and social groups, but is ultimately more reflective of the individualistic, narcissistic nature of western society. The curatorial bombast is reminiscent of the desperate assertions of Pop Idol contestants- that they just know they have got ‘it’ and are destined to be big stars.
The show is ostensively rebellious but ultimately commercial. It nods towards feminism but the apparent need to be sold and identified in the canon of ‘female artists’ becomes as reductive as the Disney stereotypes it makes a show of undermining. The image that summed up the show for me is a photograph of Maple holding a sign that reads ‘I’m an edgy contemporary artist’. It’s a joke, but the laughter rings hollow when creativity is still being packaged and sold in a Warholian cult of celebrity.

A great show!
Responding to the above comment I think it is unfair to be that flippant. I think there is a lot of personality in the work, which may come across to some like 'pop idol', but it is obvious to me the work is more mulit-layered then that.
Surely the 'female artist' aspect was tongue in cheek? That's what I took from it.
