Salon Event: Science and Art discussion - A Theory of Everything
6. Jul - 6. Jul 11 / ended Core Gallery£6.50
starts at 6.45pm
Join the debate and learn a little about theoretical physics and the arts.
This salon event explores the idea of a theory of everything and the wider symbiotic relationships that develop between art and science.
Currently only a concept in theoretical physics, the theory of everything, if found, would unite the theories which describe the world at the size of atoms and electrons (such as quantum science and the standard model) with theories which govern the macro scale of planets and galaxies (such as general relativity), as well as everything in between.
The salon is being staged as part of the exhibition ‘A Theory of Everything’ which looks at pattern as an expression of the theory, bringing together artists and scientists whose work reflects this area. Salon speakers will give a brief introduction to their specialist areas, followed by open discussion. It will be a unique opportunity to question the experts and present your own views.
Speakers:
Dr David S Berman, Reader in Theoretical Physics at Queen Mary College
Dr Berman will present an introduction to the notion of unification in fundamental physics leading up to a description of the peak of our current understanding of nature, which goes by the name of M- theory.

Adrian Holme, Lecturer in Visual theory on BA Illustration courses at Camberwell College of Art & Design, and UCA, Maidstone, Convenor of Research Cluster in Art, Science & Culture.
Adrian considers aspects of the relationship between art and science. Do art and science really form the distinct ‘two cultures’ described by CP Snow? What role does art and imagination have in relation to science and culture? And do the ideas of quantum physicist David Bohm help us towards finding some new coherence between these two realms?

Bobby Antonio, PhD student researching quantum computation at University College London
Bobby Antonio will present a brief overview of quantum physics, highlighting reasons why many people found the concepts hard to accept, and why it has had such a profound effect on disciplines outside science, such as philosophy and art.
