Not as Things Seem

I would like to respond to disgruntled101 and Dave Farnham's remarks above. Yes, it is true that these judges have worked with some of these artists in the past. However, did you consider that these judges attracted submissions by these same artists because they have crossed paths before? The judges work with the submissions they receive, if there had been any kind of favouritism, as your comments suggest, the exhibition would not have the cohesion it has. These judges chose work which entered into a discourse on issues related to current realities. Some of these issues were questions of public and private self in relation to media overload, fabrication of memory because real memory can no longer be trusted, depiction of place as idealized when place is no longer a stabilizing force. All of the artists chosen spoke of a fractured existence. They spoke of anxiety and unease with the world. If you go to see the show you will see these issues in the work. An open submission exhibition which is chosen based on favouritism is neither cohesive nor thoughtfully selected. This show is both. Another point is that all of these judges are independent and work with artist-led spaces, except for Jerwood which perhaps is considered an institution now, but it is a respected institution. Your comments suggest these judges are less than equitable, when in fact they practice with integrity. I suggest you look into their practices and backgrounds to learn more about them, and come to see the show for yourselves to determine it's quality.
